Solfeggio frequencies are a set of specific musical tones with roots in ancient sacred music. Rediscovered in the twentieth century, they are now widely used in sound healing, meditation, and self-hypnosis recordings for their proposed effects on mind and body.
Origins of the solfeggio scale #
The solfeggio tones were originally used in Gregorian chants, where each frequency was believed to carry particular spiritual qualities. The six original frequencies – 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, and 852 Hz – were identified through numerological analysis of an ancient hymn to St John the Baptist. Three additional tones (174, 285, and 963 Hz) were later incorporated into the extended nine-frequency scale used in modern practice.
While the historical claims are disputed by musicologists, the frequencies themselves are used practically in contemporary sound healing as carrier tones that may support specific intentions during meditation or therapeutic work.
The nine main solfeggio frequencies #
Each frequency in the solfeggio system is associated with a particular effect or intention:
- 174 Hz – Grounding and pain reduction. Associated with a sense of security and physical ease. Often used as a foundation tone in layered soundscapes.
- 285 Hz – Tissue repair and regeneration. Used in recordings focused on physical healing and restoration.
- 396 Hz – Liberation from guilt and fear. Said to support the release of deeply held emotional blocks and subconscious limiting beliefs.
- 417 Hz – Change and undoing. Associated with clearing past trauma and facilitating personal transformation.
- 528 Hz – Transformation and DNA repair. Known as the “love frequency,” it is one of the most widely used in healing music and is associated with clarity, peace, and restoration at a cellular level.
- 639 Hz – Connection and relationships. Used to support harmony in relationships, communication, and social bonding.
- 741 Hz – Expression and solutions. Associated with clearing toxins, awakening intuition, and supporting honest self-expression.
- 852 Hz – Intuition and spiritual awakening. Said to support the return to spiritual order and the development of inner vision.
- 963 Hz – Divine connection. Associated with higher states of consciousness and a sense of unity or transcendence.
Use in sound healing and self-hypnosis #
Solfeggio frequencies are commonly used as a tonal foundation in healing soundscapes. Rather than using them as entrainment tools in the way that isochronic tones or binaural beats are used, solfeggio frequencies are typically treated as a sustained carrier frequency – the pitch on which other sounds, music, or spoken guidance are overlaid.
In a self-hypnosis recording, for example, a practitioner might choose 528 Hz as the base frequency for a session focused on emotional release, tuning the background music or drone tone to that pitch. The intention is not necessarily to trigger the frequency following response, but to create an audio environment that feels resonant with the session’s purpose.
Some producers layer solfeggio tones with brainwave entrainment techniques, using the solfeggio frequency as the carrier tone on which binaural or isochronic pulses are applied. This combines the proposed tonal effects with measurable entrainment.
A balanced view #
The specific claims made about each solfeggio frequency – particularly the more metaphysical ones – are not supported by clinical research. Their effects, where reported, are likely attributable to the general benefits of music, relaxation, and focused intention rather than to the specific frequencies themselves.
That said, many people find solfeggio-tuned recordings to be genuinely supportive during meditation, hypnotherapy, and personal reflection. Whether the mechanism is neurological, psychological, or simply aesthetic, the practical value for many practitioners and clients is real.
