If you’ve never had coaching before, it’s natural to wonder what actually goes on in the room – or on the screen. People often imagine a stern interrogation, a rigid framework, or vague conversation that goes nowhere. The reality is much simpler, and far more useful.
Below is what happens in a coaching session with me, from the moment we connect to the moment we close.
A clear, predictable structure #
Each session follows a four-part arc designed to use your time well:
- Check-in – a brief landing space. We notice what you’ve brought into the room: your energy, your week, anything you want me to know before we begin.
- Focus area – together we name what would be most valuable to spend this hour on. Sometimes you arrive certain; sometimes the real focus emerges in the first five minutes.
- Exploration – the heart of the work. We dig into the focus area through questions, reflection, and (where useful) practical frameworks. This is where insight, clarity, or decisions tend to surface.
- Commitments – we close by translating insight into action. Small, specific, doable next steps that carry the work forward into your week.
This coaching session structure keeps things grounded without being mechanical. The shape stays the same; the content is entirely yours.
How a coaching conversation differs from an ordinary chat #
Talking to a friend is generous, but it isn’t coaching. A coaching conversation is built around your agenda, with no need to reciprocate or manage the other person’s reaction. I’m listening with a different ear – for patterns, for what’s not being said, for the place where you’re stuck in your own thinking.
I’ll ask questions you wouldn’t ask yourself. I’ll reflect back what I hear, including the parts that are uncomfortable. And I’ll resist the temptation to give you ready-made answers, because the answers that change things are almost always the ones you arrive at yourself.
What my coaching style feels like in practice #
My approach is warm but direct. I won’t waste your time with platitudes, and I won’t push you into work you’re not ready for. Expect honesty, the occasional challenge, and a steady refusal to let you off the hook on what matters to you.
I draw on coaching, hypnotherapy, and NLP, so when something deeper is in the way – a belief, a pattern, an emotional knot – we have tools beyond conversation if you want to use them.
What’s expected of you #
You don’t need to prepare a script or arrive with everything figured out. What helps most is:
- Being honest about where you actually are, not where you think you should be
- Bringing one thing – a question, a stuckness, a goal – that you’d like to move on
- A willingness to think out loud and be surprised by what you discover
Online sessions vs in-person #
Most clients work with me online via Zoom, which works remarkably well for coaching – there’s no commute, you can be in your own space, and the depth of the conversation is unaffected. In-person sessions in London are also available when location and logistics allow. The structure and feel of the work are the same in either format.

The best way to know what happens in a coaching session is to have one.
