Between-lives regression, also known as life-between-lives (LBL) regression, is a form of spiritual hypnosis that guides a client past the memory of any single incarnation and into the space the soul is believed to occupy between physical lives. Where past life regression centres on recalling a specific former life — its people, places, and unresolved emotional threads — between-lives regression asks a different question: what does the soul experience, learn, and plan for in the space between one incarnation and the next?

The method most associated with this work traces back to Dr Michael Newton, whose case studies with thousands of hypnotherapy clients in a deep trance state produced strikingly consistent reports of a soul realm — one with soul groups, guides, learning environments, and a process of reviewing and planning lives. Practitioners trained in this lineage, sometimes called Newton Method or Life Between Lives regression, use extended, carefully sequenced inductions to take a client well past the ‘past life’ layer into this deeper soul-level space.

Between-lives regression vs past-life regression: what’s the difference? #

The distinction is really one of destination and depth. Past-life regression typically stops at a remembered lifetime and explores it as a scene — useful for understanding a recurring fear, relationship pattern, or physical sensation that seems to have no origin in this life. Between-lives regression deliberately moves through and beyond that lifetime, into the interval where the soul is not embodied at all. It tends to require a longer session and a more gradual induction, because the client is being guided further from ordinary waking reference points.

What clients typically explore in a between-lives session #

People come to between-lives work with different questions, but common themes include:

  • Soul purpose — why this life was chosen, and what it is oriented around learning or healing.
  • Soul groups — a sense of familiar souls encountered across lifetimes, including people currently in the client’s life.
  • Life planning — the idea that certain challenges, relationships, or turning points were anticipated before birth, connecting closely to the idea of soul contracts made between lives.
  • Perspective on loss — for some, this work offers a different lens on death and separation, which is part of why it can sit alongside sessions exploring how spiritual hypnosis can help with grief and loss.

What a between-lives regression session involves #

A between-lives session is usually longer than a standard regression — often two to three hours — because of the additional depth of induction required and the amount of ground being covered. The client remains in a safe, guided hypnotic state throughout, fully able to speak and respond; nothing about the process involves losing control or awareness. Sessions typically begin with a briefer regression through relevant past-life material before moving into the between-lives space itself, closing with time to reflect on and integrate whatever has come up.

Whether between-lives regression resonates with you may depend on what you are hoping to understand. Those drawn to questions of meaning, purpose, and the bigger picture of a soul’s journey often find this deeper work valuable, while others are better served starting with a single past-life exploration. Either way, this is reflective, client-led work — approached with curiosity rather than certainty about what will be found.
