The Standard Map #

In practice, the value of visual auditory kinesthetic eye cues is not as a fixed rulebook but as a starting point for calibration — noticing how a specific individual’s eyes move when you already know what they are thinking about (because they have just told you), and using that as a personal reference point for the rest of the conversation. This supports rapport and helps a practitioner track whether someone is in a more visual, auditory or feeling-based mode moment to moment, which can shape how you phrase a question or introduce an idea.
The Important Caveat #
I want to be direct about this: research does not support eye accessing cues as a reliable, universal pattern, and it certainly does not support the idea, popularised in some media, that eye movements reveal whether someone is lying. Formal studies looking for a consistent link between eye direction and truthfulness or type of thought have not found the reliable pattern the folk version claims. The honest, evidence-aware position is that eye accessing cues are a loose, individually calibrated observation tool, not a diagnostic instrument, and definitely not a polygraph.
How to Use Them Well #
The responsible use of this idea is to treat it as one small, personalised data point among many — tone of voice, word choice, posture, pacing — rather than reading meaning into a single glance. Calibrate to the individual in front of you, notice patterns over a real conversation, and hold any conclusion loosely. That is consistent with how NLP as a whole approaches the mind: practical models to be tested against the person in front of you, not fixed laws of human behaviour.
