Fear of flying – known clinically as aviophobia – is one of the most common phobias in the world, affecting an estimated one in three people to some degree. For many, it means missed holidays, avoided business trips, and a creeping sense that the world is getting smaller. For others, it has become a complete barrier to air travel altogether.

The good news is that fear of flying is one of the most treatable phobias there is. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and hypnotherapy, used individually or in combination, consistently produce rapid, lasting results where other approaches have struggled.

Understanding the Fear #

Flight phobia rarely comes down to a rational concern about statistics (even though flying is one of the safest forms of transport in existence). It operates in three stages that reinforce one another:

Anticipatory anxiety – the dread that builds in the days and weeks before a trip. The imagination rehearses disaster scenarios in vivid, looping detail.

In-flight panic – once on board, the nervous system goes into full threat-response, triggering the fight-or-flight state even in the absence of real danger.

Avoidance – the decision to simply not fly. This provides temporary relief but reinforces the fear and gradually narrows the world.

The NLP Approach #

NLP offers a set of rapid, precise tools for reprogramming the emotional and perceptual associations that underpin phobias. Key techniques include:

The Fast Phobia Cure – a structured dissociation technique that allows the client to review the fear memory from a safe distance, stripping out the emotional charge rapidly and permanently.

Submodality work – changing the internal qualities of the mental representations associated with flying (the size, brightness, distance, and movement of internal images) to fundamentally alter their emotional impact.

Timeline work – exploring the original formation of the fear and updating the internal representation so the past no longer drives present responses.

The Hypnotherapy Approach #

Where NLP often works with the structure of experience, hypnotherapy works through deep relaxation and direct communication with the subconscious mind. In a hypnotic state, the critical conscious mind steps back, and it becomes possible to:

Install new, calm associations with flying – aircraft as safe, modern machines staffed by trained professionals. Create a relaxation anchor – a reliable internal trigger that can be fired during a flight to induce physical calm on demand. Future pace confidently – mentally rehearse a successful, comfortable flight in full sensory detail, so that the nervous system has already “done” it before the real experience.

What to Expect #

Most clients with fear of flying see significant results within one to three sessions. Martin Pavion’s approach typically combines NLP and hypnotherapy within a single session structure, addressing both the historical roots of the fear and the practical mechanics of staying calm during actual flights.

Clients regularly report being able to board and fly with a level of calm they had not thought possible – and in many cases, they describe the change as profound and permanent.

If you are ready to reclaim your freedom to travel, book a session with Martin or get in touch to discuss your situation.
